Fernie battles beavers

The City of Fernie staff have their work cut out for them as beaver run amok in local parks.

City staff say over the past few years, beavers felled hundreds of trees in local parks.

The damaged trees can be a hazard to park users.

The city holds an out-of-season trapping license and works with a certified trapper to selectively remove beavers from high-impact areas.

Crews have also installed protective wiring around hundreds of trees in high-use areas.

The city says there are over 173 hectares of parks around the city and they can’t notice every damaged tree.

They are asking residents to submit a request for service on the city’s website if they find any unsafe trees.
