Elk Valley regional accessibility plan nears completion

A regional plan to address accessibility in the Elk Valley is in its final stages before adoption.

The draft plan has been presented by the accessibility committee to Elkford, Fernie and Sparwood councils.

Fernie acting corporate services director Camille Neal says the accessibility plan will help guide municipalities to make necessary improvements.

“These initiatives are specifically focused on municipally owned properties and infrastructure,” she said.

“This includes working towards barrier free access to municipally owned buildings and facilities.”

She say the plan includes improvements they can make on making their hiring efforts more accessible.

“This includes municipalities having images that include people with disabilities in media and marketing to have fair representation,” she said.

“Reviewing hiring practices, ensuring we’re using plain language that we’re offering flexible work options or even on our job postings that there is non-traditional ways to apply and interview should that be a barrier.”

The committee will be taking the last bit of feedback from the councils and adjusting the plan before it is up for final adoption.
