Community Connections Society of Southeast BC and the Homeless Services Association of BC will be conducting a point-in-time homelessness count later this month.
City of Cranbrook staff say the April 14 count will help get deeper insight into homelessness trends in the community.
The province has updated the methodology of the how they do the count.
The new count is expected to better capture all populations experiencing chronic or episodic homelessness with a key focus on youth and senior homelessness.
Cranbrook social development coordinator Marcel Germer says they expect homelessness numbers to rise but with the new methodology it may just be including people who weren’t counted properly in the past.
“This may result in higher point-in-time numbers, but it’s important to recognize that this does not mean there is a rise in homelessness in Cranbrook, but rather a clearer picture based on more accurate data collection,” she said.
Once the count is complete, results will be available the Homelessness Services Association of BC website.
