A wanted man was not running back up that hill after losing his footing thanks to a bystander who helped Elk Valley RCMP arrest him as he fled.
Just before 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, officers on patrol in the 100 block of Sparwood’s Aspen Drive spotted a vehicle known to be used by a man who was wanted on several outstanding warrants.
Police officials say the vehicle stopped near the Esso gas station and the officer recognized the wanted man when he was sitting in the passenger seat.
The officer attempted to arrest the man for his outstanding warrants and for being within 50 kilometres of Sparwood, but he fled when the officer laid hands on him.
“A foot pursuit ensued toward Highway 43, where contact again was made with the man, who continued to run from police,” said RCMP officials.
A pair of citizens stopped to see what was going on and one of them attempted to slow the suspect down with his vehicle door.
Police say the suspect bounced off the door and attempted to run down the steep slope adjacent to the highway.
However, he lost his footing – and both shoes – as he went cartwheeling toward the trailer park below.
“The officer, after observing the man roll down the hill, commandeered the other vehicle for transport,” said police officials.
“This unidentified driver drove the officer to the bottom of the road leading into the trailer park.”
Other on-duty officers set up a containment zone and called in the Police Dog Service team, who arrived at about 8 p.m.
The dog tracked down and eventually found the suspect hiding under a flat deck trailer.
Officers directed the man to come out but he refused to move or show his hands, so the police dog helped force the man out of hiding and into police custody.
The suspect, 36-year-old Brady Shane Foy, was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries sustained during his flight from police.
Foy is expected to appear in court to face new charges of breaching his conditions, resisting arrest and his outstanding warrants.
Police want to get in touch with the bystanders who helped in this arrest.
“Elk Valley RCMP would like to identify and thank the two people who willingly involved themselves during the arrest and flight of Foy from Police,” said RCMP officials.
