Cranbrook introducing bylaw bike patrol

The City of Cranbrook is starting a new program that will see bylaw officers cruise through community on bicycles.

“The bylaw department will be implementing a new bike patrol program through the spring, summer and into the fall,” said bylaw services manager Paul Heywood.

“At any given time we will have one or two officers riding around a select part of the down town core and into the rec zone.

He says the flexibility of the bikes allows the officers to go into parks, quickly check City facilities and responding to people’s needs.

“Approaching people and dealing with situations as they arise, he added.

“This is going to be a very proactive unit assisting citizens who are trying to enjoy the parks and rec zones.”

The city believes it will be an effective and visible means of bylaw enforcement.

Heywood says there is also the option to make bicycles available to other department members outside of scheduled patrol hours to reduce the use of the city’s vehicle fleet.
