Sparwood approves sewer and water parcel tax hike

Sparwood district council has approved an increase to the sewer and water parcel tax to help fund the wastewater treatment plant project.

The parcel tax is set to increase $400 over the next three years.

There will be a $100 increase in 2025, a $150 increase in 2026 followed by another $150 increase in 2027.

With the increase the parcel tax in 2025 will be $258.62.

The district is looking to borrow $20 million for the wastewater treatment plant project.

“This is the first time the district of Sparwood has had to borrow any substantial amount of money,” mayor David Wilks said.

“We’re getting to a point now where our infrastructure needs to be replaced or upgraded for sure.”

The money the district gets from the parcel tax hike will go directly to paying off the loan.
