Proposed housing and commercial devlopment moving to public consultation phase

Cranbrook city council has directed staff to undertake public consultation on a proposed housing and commercial development.

The developer is looking to build a highway commercial shop and 37-unit apartment complex at 800 and 810 Cranbrook Street North.

The applicant had recently consolidated the two parcels into a single 0.6 Ha parcel.

The commercial building would be an Automotive Glass Repair shop.

“The apartment building would host all one bedroom units with an exception for the penthouse suite which would have three bedrooms,” said community planner Conor Britton.

The previous buildings on the site were destroyed by a fire.

“About five years ago the two buildings that were there burned down,” he added.

“It’s gone undeveloped for some time and this would be an opportunity for the city to allow more residential inventory.”

Britton says the location is a great spot for residential use.

“It’s a good area for that sort of development as it’s close to the downtown, highway commercial corridor and other high density residences,” he said.

The City is required to refer the application to the School District #5 for consultation as multi-family developments may have potential to impact school catchment numbers.
