Kootenay unemployment remains the second lowest in Canada

The Kootenay’s unemployment remains the second lowest in the country, at 3.8 per cent, despite going up almost a full per cent.

Stats Canada say an increase of about 800 in the number of job seekers in December resulted in a January rate.

Across BC the inflation rate was 6 per cent.

Nationally, Canada’s unemployment rate dropped slightly to 6.6% last month with more jobs added than expected.

It marks the second straight month that the rate has fallen, following a recent peak in November of 6.8 per cent.

The labour market also added 76,000 jobs with the manufacturing sector seeing the biggest gains.

  • Quebec/Saskatchewan 5.4 per cent
  • Nova Scotia 5.9 per cent
  • British Columbia 6.0 per cent
  • Manitoba 6.1 per cent
  • New Brunswick 6.4 per cent
  • Alberta 6.7 per cent
  • Ontario 7.6 per cent
  • Prince Edward Island 7.2 per cent
  • Newfoundland and Labrador 10.6 per cent
