The City of Cranbrook is undertaking a climate adaptation survey about emergency preparedness and backyard food production, in collaboration with the Rural Development Institute at Selkirk College.
According to the City of Cranbrook, the short survey is focused in a way to “help understand how prepared Cranbrook residents are for the impacts of climate change”.
The survey measures and assess to indicators of climate adaptation, being emergency preparedness and local food security.
“We look forward to seeing the results of the survey, so we know the proportion of residents growing their own food and/or being prepared for an emergency,” said Mike Matejka, Manager of Infrastructure Planning and Delivery Division with the City of Cranbrook. “Once we know where we are at, we can determine what steps we can take to help residents become more resilient to the impacts of climate change.”
The City of Cranbrook said that growing food in backyards in an important aspect of self-sufficiency and local food security while having an emergency preparedness kit ensures residents have basic supplies and important documents should there be an emergency like a wildfire or flood.
Paper copies of the survey are available at Cranbrook City Hall, the Cranbrook Public Library, and at Western Financial Place’s customer service desk. Otherwise, residents can fill out the survey until August 30, 2019, online.
