Province issuing special hunting permits for CWD testing

The province is issuing 50 special permits to licensed hunters to harvest deer in a specific area surrounding Cranbrook.

The animals killed will be tested for chronic wasting disease.

Two cases were found in January 2024 and another two were found in November.

The government is working with the Kootenay Wildlife Association to reach hunters and issue permits and more permits may be issued in the future.

The removal of deer won’t be within city limits.

The province is still developing a plan that will address urban deer populations.

Restrictions are still in place for transport, testing and disposal of deer, elk and moose carcasses.
