Fernie EBUG returns to Golden Bears

Fernie goaltender Tyler Palmer is back with the Alberta Golden Bears after an emergency stint in the NHL.

Palmer was called up as an emergency backup goaltender (EBUG) on Jan. 21 to sub in for goalie Calvin Pickard.

He was then called upon again as a backup for Stuart Skinner who left the team to attend the birth of his second child.

“We all just almost fell off our chairs when we found out,” said his mom Char Palmer.

“It was so exciting.”

Even though he didn’t play in either game, his mom says the team treated him as a part of the team.

“He told me they were very welcoming and Calvin Pickard took him under his wing and showed him the ropes. He felt like one of the guys,” she added.

He’s now back playing with Solar Bears at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

“He’ll continue on as normal,” she said.

“They are having a great season and he’s loving his time up there. He’s going to school for kinesiology.”

The Solar Bears are 22-12-0 on the season and are preparing for a playoff push.
