Local gymnast gets NCAA scholarship

Malayah McArthur of the Key City Gymnastics Club has signed a four-year NCAA scholarship with Hawaii Pacific University.

She is the first Kootenay Zone gymnast to earn an NCAA scholarship.

McArthur says she will be doing acrobatics and tumbling.

“I’ve been doing gymnastics my whole life, but the part I was always the most strongly involved with was floor and that’s the tumbling aspect,” she said.

Her father, Gord, says they are proud of her achievement and there are a lot more opportunities for her in the U.S.

“To see my daughter have that opportunity is incredible and because there isn’t much of a post-secondary opportunity for gymnastics in Canada, for her to get to go to the States let alone Hawaii it’s pretty amazing,” he added.

McArthur has been with the Key City Gymnastics Club for 14 years.
