Sparwood Search and Rescue (SAR) members taking part in some weekend training had to put those skills to the test when their exercises turned into a real rescue mission.
SAR members were doing snowmobile training and trail familiarization when they came across a party of snowmobilers, one of whom was injured while riding in the area.
The training session quickly changed to a rescue and members jumped into action.
“Our members were able to provide first aid, move the injured person to an area where weather conditions would permit a helicopter flight, and arrange to have him evacuated to the care of BC Ambulance with the help of Fernie Search and Rescue and Ascent Helicopters Ltd,” said Sparwood SAR officials.
Outdoor enthusiasts are reminded to take advantage of SAR resources if they find themselves in an emergency.
“There is no charge for Search and Rescue in BC so if you have an emergency in the backcountry, don’t hesitate to make the call for help by calling 911 or using the SOS function on your satellite device,” said Sparwood SAR officials.
SAR officials remind you to make sure you are prepared when you head into the outdoors by having food, water, any necessary gear, a trip plan and consider purchasing a SPOT or in Reach device.
