Local skier to represent Canada at the 2025 FISU Winter World University Games

Fernie skier Kaleb Barnum will represent Canada on the slopes in the 2025 FISU 32nd Winter World University Games.

The 2025 games will bring together top university athletes from around the world to compete in Turin, Italy.

Barnum previously won gold at the 2024 FIS Ski Cross Junior World Championships in Sweden and is a member of the Canadian National Ski Cross Team.

“It’s a sport that involves a track that looks like a BMX or motocross track, but it’s on skis,” said Barnum.

“The first two to the bottom move on to the next round until the final round where the first across the finish line wins.”

Barnum, a 20-year-old biomechanics student at the University of Calgary, has been a lifelong skier.

“I’m super excited to represent Canada and be a part of the team,” said Barnum.

“I’ve been skiing since I was 18 months old and I started racing alpine skiing when I was about four. Later, I started racing for the University of Calgary’s alpine team for a year, then I switched to ski cross in 2023.”

The 2025 FISU Winter World University Games will run from January 13 to 23.

After the competition, Barnum will remain in Europe to compete in the Europa Cup Ski-Cross Race Series.
