Columbia River Treaty information session to provide updates as Trump threat looms

The province’s Columbia River Treaty team will be sharing updates and answering questions as they hurry to get the agreement in principle (AIP) passed before the next presidency.

The 90-minute virtual information session will take place at 7 p.m. Mountain Time on Dec. 19.

RDEK director Stan Doehle says it’s important that anyone interested in participating does so because this will be the last chance for the public to discuss the AIP.

“I urge everyone to go on there because it’s important we get it right and at this point, it’s going to be the only public meeting we have on the AIP,” he said.

He says it would have been nice to have more public feedback sessions, but they are trying to get it done before President Donald Trump takes office.

“The big rush right now is that they’re trying to get the agreement in principle approved through our federal government and the federal government in the US before the Trump team gets put in place,” he said.

“It’s got to be done by January the 20th.”

Doehle says they really have no idea what will happen once he’s in power, so they are trying to push it through quickly.

“There’s no guarantee it will go through,” he said.

“They figure they can get it through but who knows? It’s all a what if.”
