Elk Valley RCMP investigating alleged assault in Fernie

An alleged assault in Fernie this week has Elk Valley RCMP seeking public assistance to find the suspect.

On Wednesday, December 11 at about 6:45 p.m., a 45-year-old woman was assaulted in the 1100 or 1200 block of 1st Avenue.

Police officials say the victim did not know her assailant and she managed to escape without any injuries.

RCMP officials say rumours began circulating and likely pointed to the wrong suspect.

“Information spread on social media suggested that a cross-country skier was a person of interest, however, the RCMP now believe that the skier person was a bystander and likely witnessed the event,” said the Elk Valley RCMP.

Any information on the assault, the suspect’s identity or witnesses can be reported to the Fernie Detachment at 250-423-4404.
