Local Chambers of Commerce seeking comment on Canada Post strike impacts on business

Local Chambers of Commerce are seeking comments on how businesses have been impacted by the strike of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

“The postal strike has been going on since November 15 and we’re anticipating some impacts on local businesses in Cranbrook,” said Stacey Brensrud, Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.

“We’re looking for some data to help support a stronger position. There is a nationwide effort to learn the impacts on businesses of having Canada Post shut down for so long.”

Brensrud says the information will go to reinforce advocacy on behalf of businesses.

“The data will be compiled and they’ll take a look at the emerging theme, then there will be some discussion on the next steps at the regional, provincial and federal level on which points to bring forward to advocate to get things moving and get this labour dispute resolved,” said Brensrud.

The survey is only open until midnight on Tuesday, December 10, but the Chamber hopes to gain insight into how businesses are feeling.

“We need to have a healthy economy, we need good jobs to have a healthy community. Business and industry are part of how social programming, the public sector and infrastructure are paid for,” said Brensrud.

“It’s really important that businesses can succeed, so with increased costs and labour disputes and other challenges coming their way, it’s cutting into their margins. Things are getting increasingly difficult for businesses, if we can take a look at one issue at a time, then that’s what we need to do as a Chamber.”
