Local ski destinations eager for opening weekend following massive snow dump

Fernie Alpine Resort is ready to ring in the ski season with a thick blanket of fresh powder on its slopes after heavy snowfall has battered the Elk Valley.

Resorts of the Canadian Rockies Spokesperson Matt Mosteller says the winter storms dumped almost 100 centimetres of snow onto the resort’s slopes.

“It’s a snow-tacular start to the ski season. It’s one of the best we’ve seen in the last 15 years,” said Mosteller.

“In fact, there’s been over eight feet of total snowfall so far this year at Fernie Alpine Resort.”

Fernie Alpine Resort will be open to skiers and snowboarders on Friday, November 29.

Mosteller says the recent snowfall has made for optimal conditions for people wanting to hit the slopes.

“This is going to be a great early season conditions opener,” said Mosteller.

“I think it’s going to be a great experience for those who get a chance to ski and ride this Friday.”

Mosteller says Fernie Alpine Resort and other skiing destinations are not just great for outdoor enthusiasts, they are also beneficial to the local economy.

“The ski resorts along the Powder Highway are a giant economic engine for the region. Not only enjoyed by residents and locals, but it’s also a massive draw for people who come to ride and ski with us from afar,” said Mosteller.

“Tourism can really benefit from these early snowy starts at the beginning of ski season while people are looking to book in advice for their skiing and riding vacations.”

If you are getting ready to hit the slopes, Mosteller says it is vital to take your gear out and inspect it ahead of time to see if it needs to be repaired, maintained or replaced.

“It’s best to visit a ski and ride shop before you head out to have your gear checked out before you go skiing and riding,” said Mosteller.

“Remember to check all of your clothing, gloves and ski boots to make sure it all fits. Remember, with early-season conditions, start out slow for the beginning of your season.”

Fernie Alpine Resort also went through some upgrades ahead of opening weekend, with renovations at the Griz Bar, flow adjustments of multiple runs and trail resurfacing.

You can check out the Snow Report and Mountain Cams for up-to-date details about conditions on the slopes.
