Cranbrook coach seeing early success with Flames

Cranbrook’s Ryan Huska and the Calgary Flames have been off to a hot start this season.

Huska was born in Cranbrook and grew up in Trail.

He was named the head coach of the Flames leading up to the 2023/24 season.

The Flames had a disappointing season last year, but are now starting to put it together.

“I think the players have a better understanding of success and that’s a big part of it, keeping pucks out of our net. Our goaltending has been very good, that’s one thing, but we don’t give up the same amount of odd-man rushes that we have in the past,” Huska said in a pregame press conference.

“We don’t have the same amount of turnovers. We’re a little more responsible with our play in that area. The goals are going to come if the work is there and that is something I continue to see from the players.”

The Flames are 11-6-3 to start the season.

Huska says they need to continue to work on setting themselves up for success during games and playing with the lead.

“You don’t want to put yourself in bad situations by taking poor penalties at the wrong time or mismanaging the puck at the wrong time,” he said.

“If you take a lot of pride in not hurting yourself, you’ll have a chance at some point in the game to get back into it and that’s one of the qualities I’ve seen develop in our group over the course of the year. Now it’s about finding a way to piece everything together and that’s what we’ll continue to work on.’

The Flames will be at home tomorrow for an early 2 p.m. game against the Minnesota Wild before starting a four-game road trip.
