‘A true patriot’ Former MLA reflects on John Horgan’s legacy

Retired Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Doug Clovechok says British Columbia has lost a great man following the death of former premier John Horgan.

Horgan passed away at the age of 65 following a battle with cancer.

“Just like so many British Colombians, I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of John,” said Clovechok.

“I truly had the privilege of getting to know John in the legislature and over the years we had some great laughs together.”

He says the person Horgan was in politics was the same in his daily life.

“He was a fine man. He was a fair man and was someone who actually truly cared about people,” he added.

“He was a patriot when it comes to British Columbia. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for people.”

Despite being in different political parties, Clovechok says he respected him as a politician immensely.

“He was a tiger when it came to politics and question period, but I have to say honestly that he was very generous in helping me help my constituents even though we were on opposite sides of the floor. I came to respect him so much,” he said.

“No matter what political stripe you were, you could be mad at his policies or what the NDP was doing, but you always had such great respect for him.”

Clovechok says Horgan had a realness to him that voters appreciated.

“He was a human and came across as a regular ordinary guy you could sit down and have a drink and bull**** with,” he said.

Horgan served as premier from 2017-2022 and was most recently serving as the Canadian Ambassador to Germany.

“British Columbia has lost a true patriot and I wish all of his family the very best during this difficult time,” said Clovechok.

“It was an honour to know him and an absolute honour to serve with him. He’s going to be missed.”
