With Remembrance Day on Monday, November 11, local Royal Canadian Legion branches across the East Kootenay are preparing to host public ceremonies.
“Remembrance Day honours all past veterans, no matter what war they were in or even those who didn’t see combat, but it’s mainly to honour the fallen soldiers,” said Bob Muir, former President of Cranbrook’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch #24.
Civilians are invited to take part in ceremonies in their community.
“The public who have not served in the military can come down on Remembrance Day. We always get a really good turnout at the cenotaph,” said Muir.
“The public can come out to support and remember. That is a very important part of Remembrance Day.”
Details on local ceremonies can be found below, each will have a moment of silence at 11 a.m.:
- Cranbrook
- A parade will march to Rotary Park at 10:30 a.m. with a ceremony to start at 10:45.
- Edgewater
- Edgewater will have an afternoon ceremony starting with a parade to Cenotaph Park at 4 p.m., followed by a ceremony at 4:10 p.m. Residents can also attend a reception at the Legion building at 5 p.m.
- Fernie
- The parade to Fernie’s Cenotaph will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by a ceremony at 10:55 a.m.
- Invermere
- A short parade will move from the Legion building and march to Cenotaph Park. The official ceremony will begin at 10:55. Residents can also attend a reception at the Legion building at noon.
