City in early stages of water meter implementation

The City of Cranbrook will be phasing in water meters beginning with new buildings and developments.

Cranbrook council approved the implementation of water meters in late 2023 as part of the 2024 budget.

The city has issued a request for a proposal to select a water meter supplier and software supplier.

“There is no firm budget or schedule for the software implementation and water setting rate setting, as we want to work with the successful proponent selected through this RFP process, and Council, on various options available to move forward,” said engineering and development services director Mike Matejka.

“Having a water meter supplier selected will still allow for meters to be installed in new builds at the cost of the builder or developer, as is the standard practice in other municipalities.”

Water metering was one of the initiatives from the city’s water quality and supply master plan to ensure enough water supply from the community’s reservoirs.

There is no plan in place yet for universal metering of existing properties although that is the direction the city is moving towards.

City staff will be bringing more information to council in early 2025 to help guide the next steps of the implementation.
