Invermere FireSmart is looking for ways to better protect the community against wildfires through the creation of a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan.
“It’s an overlook of the community and it can look at various aspects like FireSmart at the home level. It could also include fuel mitigation or response capacity,” said Steve Levitt, Invermere’s Wildfire Mitigation Specialist.
“The idea is to identify strengths and opportunities for the community and guide what sort of activities we should do in the future to be more wildfire resilient.”
Invermere is gathering public input in the creation of this plan to help guide their decisions.
“We’re looking to gauge residents’ understanding and find out what areas might be important to them from a FireSmart perspective,” said Levitt.
“That can also help us guide what kind of education and activities we need to do.”
Levitt says the CWRP will help the community be proactive about wildfire mitigation.
“We’ve seen an increase in wildfire activity impacting communities,” said Levitt.
“It’s critical that we prepare for that event if it happens so we suffer less losses in our community.”
You can find the survey here and it will be open to residents and property owners until Oct. 31.
