The District of Invermere is looking for residents’ insight to help with the creation of a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP).
The plan will help identify wildfire hazards and determine strategies to deal with them.
“This plan will help us have a little snapshot of where we’re at right now in terms of wildfire resiliency,” said Mayor Al Miller.
“We want to see what we need to do for the future. We’ve done a lot of work over the years and I feel like we’re not in bad shape, but we need to look everything over.”
Miller says Invermere has been relatively safe from wildfires, but there have been some concerning moments.
“We’ve had some close calls, nothing right on our border, but close by. It makes you think about what would happen if it got the right wind at the right time,” said Miller.
“We want to make sure we’re proactive and not being reactive.”
A registered professional forester with Nupqu Resource LP is drafting the plan, with survey input being used to help guide the process.
“We like to include the community. We all live here, work here and we want to enjoy it,” said Miller.
“If people have any knowledge of areas that are particularly problematic, we want them to bring it to our attention.”
