Stolen Wall of Honour plaque replaced after two years

A plaque was unveiled at the Wall of Honour in Cranbrook’s Rotary Park replacing the one stolen over two years ago.

The original bronze plaques were discovered stolen on June 30, 2022.

The large bronze plaque on the mural side of the Wall of Honour and another commemorating the loss of workers due to workplace accidents or health-related issues were missing.

A third plaque was damaged but the thief wasn’t able to remove it.

A new Wall of Honour plaque was donated by Cranbrook Dodge and installed in a small ceremony on Oct. 1.

“I’m a veteran and it means a lot to us to honour the people who gave their lives and still give their lives for the military and our country,” said Cranbrook Dodge owner Steve Mercandelli.

When it was clear the old plaques weren’t going to be returned, Mercandelli offered to fund the replacement.

“The fact that someone went and stole that greatly upset me and we were talking about how I could help,” he added.

“Cranbrook Dodge is happy and honoured to help out and supply the new plaque for the Wall of Honour.”
