Fernie Rotary Club honour International Day of Peace with Peace Pole

The Fernie Rotary Club has dedicated a Peace Pole in honour of International Day of Peace.

“It’s an internationally recognized symbol of the hopes of humanity for peace on earth,” explained Anita Palmer, Fernie Rotary Club director.

“There are over 250,000 Peace Poles across the entire world dedicated as monuments to peace.”

The pole is made out of recycled plastic and has the same phrase repeated in eight different languages.

“Our Peace Pole bears the message ‘may peace prevail on Earth’ in different languages on each side,” said Palmer.

“The languages we chose are Ktunaxa, English, Spanish, Punjabi, French, Italian, German and Ukrainian. They were chosen by the Fernie Rotary Club as they play a part in the community’s history.”

Fernie’s new pole now stands in Rotary Park and is the culmination of several years of effort.

“This project has been two years in the making, and it has been near and dear to my heart,” said Palmer.

“Our Peace Pole was gifted to us by the District 5080 Peace Committee and in return, the Fernie Rotary Club gifted a Peace Pole to Sandpoint, Idaho.”
