Fernie to explore EV charging stations at skate park

The City of Fernie will be looking at a partnership with EVlution to establish a fast-charging station at the skate park.

EVlution came to the city back in April to see if they would be interested in leasing a small portion of the skate park land so fast charging infrastructure could be set up.

Fernie CAO Michael Boronowski said there is a grant the company can apply for that may help reduce the cost.

“There’s a federal program that could offer up to 50 per cent funding for such a project and if they are considered eligible up to 50 per cent of the cost of developing the agreements and designs is also recoverable,” he said.

“It feels like a low-risk initiative.”

The grant application deadline is Sept. 19, 2024.

If the company can secure grant funding, the city is anticipating a three-month window for negotiations and completion of a contribution agreement.

The partnership would also likely include solar panels being installed on the roof structure over the skate park.
