Cranbrook applying for active transportation grant

Cranbrook council has approved a grant application to the province for an active transportation project in the Wildstone Drive area.

The project would connect Cranbrook’s active transportation network including Rotary Way and the Rails to Trails to the Wildstone and McPhee Road Areas.

Councillor Lynnette Wray said it would also improve pedestrian safety.

“This is an important and growing residential area and it’s unique in that it needs to co-exist with the industrial uses that are in the same area,” she said.

“We want to make sure that the folks who live in various developments in the Wildstone area can safely walk and cycle. We do not want someone to get severely hurt or killed.”

The City is planning resurfacing work along McPhee Road for next year and if they get the grant funding it would reduce the cost of that project from $1.2 million to $940,000.

City staff said the project is designed enough that it would be shovel-ready for the city’s 2025 paving program.
