BC government to restrict cellphone use in schools

Starting this school year, cellphones and other devices will be restricted in BC.

The BC Government says the goal of these restrictions is to keep students safe and healthy, with school districts across the province having policies to restrict cellphone use for students at school.

Minister of Education and Child Care Rachna Singh says they want to make sure when kids are in the classroom, they can learn without distractions.

“This work will help to minimize some of those distractions so we can set students up for success, and we can then focus on empowering students to develop safe, informed, healthy habits when using technology and social media,” said Singh.

Along with this change, the province aims to keep kids safe by protecting them from online predators, exploitation, and harassing protestors, with plans to expand school food programs, and to make CPR learning mandatory for students before graduating.

While these policies address when students can use their phones in schools, the province adds they also consider their use for accessibility and medical needs, with policies differing between districts and age groups.
