FireSmart event underway at Tretheway beach

A debris bin is open for Tretheway Beach residents to dispose of yard waste.

The community debris bin event is supposed to educate the public on the importance of clearing fire hazards around their homes.

“It teaches that things like shrubs right up against your house may not be a good idea,” said RDEK Board Chair Rob Gay.

“FireSmart principals talk about creating some open green space around your home, if you’re replacing your roof, use things that are less flammable than things like cedar shakes.”

Tree limbs, brush, leaves, grass trimmings, weeds, pine needles and pine cones are allowed in the bin, but treated wood or construction materials won’t be accepted.

The bin will be open until Sept. 5.
