Sparwood approves multipurpose room rate decrease for Fernie youth groups

The District of Sparwood is making it easier for Fernie youth user groups to access space after the closure of the Fernie Community Hall.

Council approved the City of Fernie’s request to apply the local youth rental discount of 20 per cent to any Fernie youth organizations.

The discount will apply to the board room, multipurpose room, concourse, curling lounge, and the main hall as long as it is being booked for youth groups.

Councillor Steve Kallies agreed with the youth group rate reduction but doesn’t think it should be opened further.

“While I appreciate that their facility closed suddenly, the circumstances to me were a lack of planning and to be subsidizing a lack of planning in another community doesn’t sit well with me,” he said.

“However, since this is for youth groups I wholeheartedly support it.”

It will be in place until a new Fernie Community Hall or similar type facility is operational.
