Two people in Invermere have received provincial honours for their contributions to the community.
Kicking Horse Coffee co-founder Elana Rosenfeld was inducted into the Order of British Columbia and Invermere Fire Rescue’s first female lieutenant Janicé Dallaire was awarded a Medal of Good Citizenship.
B.C. officials said Rosenfeld was included among 12 other distinguished residents who were appointed into the 35th annual Order of British Columbia.
The award honours B.C. residents who have distinguished themselves and excelled in their fields.
Rosenfeld moved from Toronto to Invermere and co-founded Kicking Horse Coffee 32 years ago.
In her time as CEO, from 1996 to 2023 Rosenfeld grew the business into Canada’s largest organic coffee company, becoming a major North American company.
“Elana’s commitment to sustainability and community prosperity has made her a respected local leader, and created economic diversification and employment in B.C.’s Interior,” said B.C. officials.
“A role model in social enterprises, she introduced Fairtrade and certified organic partnerships and championed gender diversity and female leadership.”
Rosenfeld’s love of nature led her to become chair of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) from 2019 to 2021.
“As a philanthropist, she has donated millions to conservation causes, becoming one of Canada’s leading advocates for nature,” said B.C. officials.
“Her remarkable achievements have earned her numerous accolades, including B.C. Business Entrepreneur of the Year and recognition for Kicking Horse Coffee as the Best Place to Work in Canada.”
The Medal of Good Citizenship was given to 18 people across the province in recognition for their extraordinary contributions to their communities.
“These 18 people have made a profound impact on their communities and a positive difference in the lives of so many,” said Premier David Eby.
“By sharing their time, energy and talents, they are making B.C. a better place. Their selfless generosity is a model for us all and I thank them for it.”
B.C. officials said the Medal of Good Citizenship celebrates those who have been exceptionally generous, kind or selfless in improving their community.
Janicé Dallaire joined Invermere Fire Rescue in 2017 and eventually became the department’s first female lieutenant.
“She has spearheaded vital fundraising efforts, including those for the structural protection unit, which deploys sprinklers to protect buildings from fire,” said B.C. officials.
“Her organizational prowess shines in events like the annual Firefighters Ball, which raises crucial funds for emergency equipment and training opportunities.”
Dallaire has also been involved in major wildfire operations including Logan Lake and Kelowna while balancing local firefighting and rescue calls.
“Her contributions extend to the Invermere Fire Rescue Association, where she served as either chair or vice-chair for 6 years, helping manage and maintain association facilities,” said B.C. officials.
“Janice’s community spirit is evident in her participation in events like ‘Feed the Town’ and her leadership in initiatives such as the firefighters’ stair climb in Calgary and Seattle for the 9/11 memorial, fostering team unity and community pride.”
Dallaire made and gave out free masks to first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic along with other meaningful contributions to the community.
“Her involvement with the Invermere Christmas Bureau as the toy drive coordinator ensures that local children in need have gifts during the holiday season,” said B.C. officials.
“As a mentor and instructor with the Camp Ignite program, Janice inspires young women to pursue their dreams, showcasing her commitment to empowering the next generation.
“Janicé’s energy and enthusiasm have not only saved lives but also motivated others to achieve their goals. Her tireless dedication, compassion, and leadership reflect her lasting positive impact on Invermere and beyond.”
