Madias Creek evacuation alert lifted

The evacuation alerts in response to the Madias Creek wildfire have been lifted as firefighters make progress against the blaze.

“Our crews continue to do regular patrols to identify and deal with hot spots within the fire’s perimeter,” said Regional Emergency Operations Centre Information Officer, Loree Duczek.

“Over the past few days we have had some challenging weather conditions including strong sustained winds and even stronger gusts and the fire has stayed within its existing boundaries and has not experienced any growth.”

The fire grew to 2.11 hectares and is now classified as ‘Being Held’ as of Friday afternoon.

The RDEK’s evacuation alert was in place for 73 civic addresses in the Crooked Tree and Elkhorn areas.

Meanwhile, the alert in place for the entire ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation has also been lifted.

The RDEK said the evacuation orders for six properties in the Whiteswan Area and nine properties in the Palliser/Cross River area remain in effect.

“A local emergency information line remains open at 250-426-2188 or toll-free 1-855-346-2188 and, when not staffed, will have a recorded message with the most updated information,” said RDEK officials.
