Cranbrook fire chief proud of crews perseverance through tough week

Cranbrook’s Fire Chief Scott Driver is commending the hard work of Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services members after a busy week.

“We do have just one firehall in the City of Cranbrook and no mutual aid opportunities for us,” said Driver.

“It’s just the staff that we have and I’m incredibly proud of what they’ve been able to do in mitigating some pretty terrible circumstances.”

Over the course of last week, three homes were destroyed in Cranbrook and two grassfires got out of control.

Driver said the hot weather made the fires grow quickly and they also made the firefighting conditions harder.

“I won’t say that it’s been easy on the team,” he added.

“The gear that we wear is well over 60 pounds before we carry anything in our hands and it is insulated so in these temperatures it’s very challenging. We are certainly hoping for a reprieve here.”

There were no reported injuries in any of the fires, although one firefighter was taken to the hospital as a precaution due to the heat.
