A Fairmont couple’s quick action and preparedness helped prevent a house fire.
Members of the Fairmont Fire Department were dispatched to a fire that originated from a deep freeze on Monday evening.
Deputy Chief Jon Tames said it was caused by an overloaded extension cord.
“With these higher temperatures, these deep freezes and other appliances are working harder to keep things cool, so that would have overloaded the capacity of the extension cord.”
The fire was put out by the homeowner and a neighbour while his wife called 9-1-1.
Tames said it’s a good reminder to have basic fire extinguisher training.
“The homeowners were prepared,” he said.
“They had a fire extinguisher handy and remembered to use the PASS acronym to extinguish the fire. They pulled the pin, aimed at the base of the fire, they squeezed the handle and they swept side to side.”
Six firefighters and three apparatus responded to the call.
They remained on the scene to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and there was no other risk.
