Curbside organics collection is on the horizon for Invermere, and residents are asked for their thoughts on what the future service should involve.
“We certainly want to bring in some kind of organics pick-up to start in the fall,” said Mayor Al Miller.
“It’s always good to go to the citizens and ask about the new service, how it’s going to be handled and how we can best meet the needs of our residents.”
The program will coincide with other municipalities in the region as the RDEK works to establish a facility that can service all Columbia Valley communities.
“With organics, it’s one of the biggest parts filling landfills. If we can take good care of that side of things, I’m guessing we can cut our garbage by about half,” said Miller.
The Mayor said managing wildlife attractants is a major consideration for organics collection.
“We have to be careful because people need a place to store their bins properly because they will be an attractant,” said Miller.
“I’m guessing if we do bin collection, it will probably be weekly and we might be able to stretch out garbage collection a little bit. We’re going to save a lot of garbage by having a good organics program.”
The survey is available until July 19 and you can find it here or pick up paper copies at the District Office.
“This will be a new and additional service, so we have to look at how we’re going to pay for it and make sure we do a good job,” said Miller. “I think it’s a good program coming forth.”
