Sparwood developing ice use policy

The District of Sparwood will be creating an ice policy to help govern usage at the Sparwood Arena.

“The goal of the policy would be to grow and encourage participation in ice sports to the overall benefit of the community,” said community services director Jenna Jensen.

“To provide fair and transparent means for service delivery, consider the needs of local organizations above out-of-town organizations and strive to provide fair access to the arena.”

Staff said the new policy would likely prioritize local minor sports programs followed by public skating and district ice programs.

They will also be looking at reducing the cancellation period for ice bookings.

“User groups have consistently expressed that the 60-day cancellation requirement is too lengthy and it creates difficulty as they coordinate the season,” Jensen said.

“Although 60 days allows district staff enough time to resell the time slot should they cancel, staff would be able to work with reducing the cancellation period to 45 days.”

Once a full policy is developed by district staff, it will come to council for approval.
