Hunter survives bear attack near Cranbrook

A hunter has been hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries sustained in a bear attack near Cranbrook.

BC Conservation Officers (CO) jumped into action on Saturday, June 8 to investigate the reported attack near the Baker Mountain South Forest Service Road.

CO officials said three men were hunting when one of them shot at a black bear.

One man went to retrieve the bear, but it was still alive and it attacked him before a second man was able to shoot the animal.

COs were unsure if the bear survived, so they began searching and found a dead black bear with a recent gunshot wound.

“Officers are confident it was the bear involved in the attack after a thorough investigation of the attack site, as well as interviewing the victim and the other hunters,” said CO officials.

COs are investigating the legality of this hunt.
