Fernie mayor looking forward to skate park grand opening

Fernie’s skaters can grease up their wheels as the city gears up for the grand opening of the long-anticipated skate park.

Mayor Nic Milligan said people have already been enjoying what the new park has to offer.

“It’s an accessible, multi-wheel park. There’s been all sorts of users already,” said Milligan. “It looks amazing and clearly people are already using it.”

Construction was led by New Line Skateparks and started almost one year ago to the day, on May 15, 2023.

Milligan said he is happy to see the project completed.

“It’s a great facility, it’s an incredible amenity for our community. Our youth, users and skating community are excited,” said Milligan.

“There was a long process of engaging them to understand what they wanted and we incorporated their desires into the final product.”

The grand opening will go ahead on Thursday, May 16 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the skate park.

The event will have food, prizes, music and skateboard performances.

“The following day, we’ll be teaming up with the local shops and hosting a learn to skate session for beginners of all ages, genders and abilities with expert instructors and mentors,” said New Line Skateparks officials.
