Man Killed in Single Vehicle Collision on Lower Elk Valley Road

Elk Valley RCMP said a man has died following a fatal motor vehicle collision north of Sparwood early Wednesday morning after his gravel/dump truck left the roadway.

Receiving the call just before 7:00 am on Wednesday, July 17, 2019, Elk Valley RCMP, RCMP East Kootenay Traffic Services, the Sparwood Fire Department and the B.C. Ambulance Service all responded to scene at Lower Elk Valley Road.

Cst. Debra Katarenchuk with Elk Valley RCMP told Summit 107 that it was a single vehicle collision involving a gravel/dump truck pulling a flatbed trailer, that had left the road, careened into a shallow ditch and came to rest in a residential driveway.

“Upon the scene, the individual, male, lone occupant was unconscious and not breathing,” said Katarenchuk. “Fire Department and EHS assisted with CPR, unfortunately, the male was deceased at the scene.”

Katarenchuk said the man was in his 60s and that the incident is not criminal in nature.

“At this time, the investigation is being held with the Coroner’s Office.”

The investigation is ongoing as the B.C. Coroner’s Service has now taken the lead on the incident rather than Elk Valley RCMP.
