Cranbrook water and sewer tax increase up for adoption Monday

A tax increase for both water and sewer rates is expected to be adopted by Cranbrook council during the May 6 meeting.

Water rates will likely be increasing from $9 to $11 per meter of taxable frontage, while sewer rates are seeing a 100 per cent increase from $5 to $10.

The money supports annual water and sewer fund debt payments and contributions to capital reserves.

“Water should support water and sewer should support sewer,” said Mayor Wayne Price.

“You should be taking in what it’s going to cost.”

He said the increase will also help ensure they aren’t costing residents more in the long run.

“That’s why we’re raising these rates,” Price said.

“We’re not going to end up in these situations where we got to go out and borrow millions of dollars every year to catch up on these projects.”

The next council meeting is on May 6 at 6 p.m.
