Investigation finds loss of power led to forced landing near Cranbrook

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has released its findings into a plane crash that occurred nearly two years ago south of Cranbrook.

On Aug. 2, 2022, a firefighting aircraft lost power while conducting aerial operations in the Connell Ridge area.

The pilot was unable to regain power and completed an emergency landing in a forested area.

The plane was heavily damaged, but the pilot only sustained minor injuries.

According to the report, 40 seconds passed from the time the aircraft lost engine power and when it struck the trees.

It was flying at approximately 350 feet above ground level, which left insufficient time for the pilot to try to determine the cause and restore power.

The investigation found that the pilot’s decision-making, experience and recent training were crucial to the successful outcome.

The full report can be found below.
