Cranbrook council approves watering restriction changes

Significant changes have been made to Cranbrook’s outdoor water use regulations bylaw.

The biggest change to watering restrictions is limiting watering hours to a maximum of two hours.

Instead of being allowed to water for two hours between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. as well as from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., residents will only be able to water once a day during the first two stages of restrictions.

Once Stage 3 is in place, it will go down to one hour between 6-8 a.m. or 8-10 p.m.

In Stage 4, all use of water outdoors ends.

The same watering schedule is still in place. Even-numbered properties can water Monday, Thursday and Saturday while odd-numbered properties can water Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

The city is currently under Stage 2 restrictions.

“I think the challenges we faced as a community last summer created an appreciation about how important our water and the conservation of our water really is,” said Mayor Wayne Price.

“Whether or not last summer was an anomaly, I believe people are now understanding and much more willing to accept these types of water conservation measures.”

The city will also be bolstering its communication this year after reports of residents not seeing restrictions posted to the city’s social media sites.

“We have a way better communications plan in place for this year,” said Jason Perrault, deputy director of public works.

“We’re looking at utilizing portable digital boards, some TVs that are set up in some local businesses and sandwich signs.”

There was also concern from some residents regarding the water that local golf courses use each year.

The city has clarified that all golf courses in the area have their own water source and are not connected to the city’s system.
