Local skier to represent Canada in Ski Cross Junior World Championships

A skier from Fernie is packing to go to Sweden to represent his country on the world stage.

19-year-old Kaleb Barnum was selected to be one of six skiers travelling to Idre Fjäll, Sweden to compete in the 2024 Ski Cross Junior World Championships.

“It’s going to be a great time,” said Barnum.

“I’m definitely super excited and for me, it’s my first time representing Canada in this way.”

Barnum has had a very successful 2023-24 NorAm Cup/FIS ski season, coming off three gold medal wins.

His selection was based on how well he performed throughout the season.

“You had to gain over 100 points throughout the season,” he added.

“Those are FIS points and it’s a way for you to see how you’re doing against the rest of the world.”

Bernum explains what he will be doing on the slopes during the championship.

“Ski cross is an event where four athletes go down a track at the same time, there are jumps, rollers and bank turns and it’s first to the bottom wins,” he said.

“They do it in different heats, so the first two people in each heat move on until you get to the finals.”

The team is set to fly out of Calgary on April 5 and will train for over a week to get acclimated to the conditions in Sweden.

The championship runs from April 14-15.
