Elk Valley Search and Rescue pick up cliffed-out sledders

Fernie and Sparwood Search and Rescue teams picked up a pair of cliffed-out sledders.

SAR officials said RCMP reported the incident on Saturday night.

The two were well-prepared and camped out overnight while awaiting rescue.

The search team was dispatched on snowmobiles for a ground rescue, rather than taking to the skies.

“Poor flying conditions this morning meant that longline was not possible so two Fernie SAR techs were dropped off and toured in to them and then guided them out to where they could be picked up by snowmobile,” said Fernie SAR officials.

SAR crews emphasized the importance of being prepared when you head out.

“It’s a great example of the value of being well-prepared for backcountry emergencies because when conditions are poor it can take time for emergency services to reach you,” said Sparwood SAR officials.
