Cranbrook closes overnight emergency shelter as temperatures rise

The City of Cranbrook has deactivated the extreme weather shelter in response to overnight temperatures climbing above -15 degrees Celsius.

City officials said the extreme weather alert that triggered the overnight shelter at Christ Church Anglican has been rescinded.

The city said this shelter is important to keep vulnerable residents safe.

“Extreme weather shelters save lives and help to ensure that businesses, emergency responders, and citizens are not left scrambling to try and manage the challenges associated with people trying to survive in the cold,” said city officials.

City officials thanked Christ Church Anglican for their hospitality, ANKORS East staff for operating the shelter and the Alliance Church for offering their space as a weekend warming shelter.

“The community collaboration and teamwork that took place over the past 10 days was truly amazing and provided food and warmth to many citizens without appropriate housing and heat,” said city officials. “The City would also like to thank all the community partners, faith-based organizations, and all those community members who donated time, food, clothing, blankets/pillows and more, to save lives and provide comfort. You have truly shown that Cranbrook is a community who cares.”
