Avalanche Canada warns of heightened risk in Elk Valley

Avalanche Canada officials said the heavy snowfall is bringing a heightened risk of avalanches to mountain slopes in the Elk Valley.

This comes as a significant winter storm sweeps through the region.

“Storm slab size and reactivity will increase with snow continuing through the day Tuesday,” said Avalanche Canada.

Avalanche Canada said the region is at a level 4 risk, which means there is a high likelihood of large avalanches across elevations.

That said, the risk will likely ease off to level 3 (considerable) as the week progresses.

The agency said backcountry users should always check conditions before heading out, and those in a travelling party need to have essential rescue gear such as a transceiver, probe, and shovel and the training to use it.
