Successful year for commercial development says Sparwood mayor

Another year comes to a close in Sparwood and mayor David Wilks is happy with the commercial development they’ve seen.

“Successes this year were certainly some of the commercial builds that were completed in Sparwood or on their way to being completed, like McDonald’s, boy you’ve hit the big time when you get a McDonald’s,” Wilks said.

He said there are some other projects that have benefited or will benefit the community.

“Teck building their administrative building which is big for us,” he added.

“Moving forward, hopefully with a New Dawn construction in the New Year for a new subdivision up in Sparwood Heights, which will over its completion add around 236 doors.”

The year wasn’t without its challenges, like the tough fire season.

“Certainly, the Lladnar Creek fire was eye-opening for us and showed the vulnerability of not only our community but all communities when it comes to wildfire mitigation,” Wilks said.

“We are working towards FireSmart and working with BC Wildfire Service to get mitigations in place.”

The fire was sparked on July 21 and triggered an evacuation alert for a significant number of homes in Sparwood.
