City of Cranbrook unveils new Balment stairs

Residents can now use Cranbrook’s newly replaced Balment stairs.

The metal staircase connects 17th Avenue South near the Senior Citizens Hall to Balment Park, close to the Operation Street Angels building on the corner of 1st Street South and 17th Avenue South.

“A lot of planning, surveying and assessment was undertaken on the foundations of the original stairs once the old ones were removed,” said city officials. “This work was crucial to the manufacture and fit of the new steel stairs.”

The new structure replaces the covered wooden staircase that was beginning to show its age.

Work to replace the stars began in July and is now open to foot traffic.

While the stairs themselves are installed and complete, there is still some work left.

“A few final touches like some asphalt and concrete work will be done in the spring,” said city officials.
