Category 3 burn restrictions fully lifted in Southeast District

Category 3 burn restrictions will be fully lifted in the Southeast Fire District on Friday.

The ban was partially lifted in late Sept. for the region, excluding the Cranbrook, Invermere and Boundary areas.

This further loosening of restrictions comes after conditions improved.

“Although recent weather patterns have reduced the wildfire risk in the region, members of the public are urged to undertake any open burning responsibly to reduce the likelihood of starting a wildfire,” said BC Wildfire Service officials.

While the BC Wildfire Service has lifted its restrictions, there may be some rules in place under other jurisdictions.

“Local governments may still have burning restrictions in place, so people should check with local authorities before lighting any fire of any size,” said BC Wildfire Service officials.

If you want to start a Category 3 fire, you will have to follow a few rules.

“Anyone lighting a Category 3 open fire must first obtain a burn registration number by calling 1-888-797-1717,” said BC Wildfire Service officials. “Anyone who lights a category 2 or 3 open fire must also comply with B.C.’s air quality control legislation. Check the local venting index by calling 1-888-281-2992.”

Breaking open burning rules can come with a hefty penalty.

“Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $100,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to up to one year in jail,” said BCWS officials.

“If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs, as well as the value of the resources damaged or destroyed by the wildfire.”
